The Blessing of
All One - Part VI
In Corrogue I am All One.
In this weeks ezine I continue with Part VI of the
beautiful Chinese tale entitled We
Are All One
It is a late Sunday morning. On the windowsill in this room
is a single pink rose bud that drinks cool clear water in a
beautiful glass vase. This is the rose named Compassion. I watch
as a single plume of incense dances and disappears. Outside
my window a single bird is singing. In between the birdsong
is silence and a Rumi poem arises.
Birdsong brings relief to my longing
I am just as ecstatic as they are
With nothing to say.
Universal song, sing a song
Any song through me.
From Birdsong
Translated by Coleman Barks.
Each Sunday morning writing this ezine Blessing for YOU brings
relief to my longing to be One with It All. There is no other
longing that creates a feeling of the ecstatic. This longing
is what Goethe called ‘The Holy Longing.’ It is
the remembrance of the holy being that you are and are meant
to be at one with.
When writing this Blessing for YOU it is best if I have nothing
to say. Often I start with an idea and sometimes I simply sit
before the blank page without any idea at all. I sit and nothing
comes and I wait until the Universal song sings through ‘little
me’ when ‘little me’ is willing enough to
allow this.
In writing this Blessing for YOU each week I have the primary
intention of reminding you and myself that our essence is Love.
It is to remind you and myself to play the real game of life
and to know the experience of at one ment with Love.
This week a dear friend and I discussed this experience of
the All One. He asked me, "How do I get there?” He
was meaning, “How do I get to this place of Oneness. Let
me tell you a short story that illustrates the attitude one
needs to begin to enter this state of being that is called Oneness.
This is a Zen story.
A pupil and a Zen Master stand by a lake. The pupil asks the
Master, “Master, what does it take to become All One?”
The Zen Master takes the pupil and walks him a little distance
into the lake. Then he grasps hold of the pupil’s head
and forces it under water. He does not let the head of the pupil
go for some time. Then the master lets go. The pupil runs to
the shore and gasps. It takes him some time to recover. Then,
with some annoyance, the pupil asks the Master, “Why master
did you try and drown me?” The Zen Master smiles and asks,
“When your head was under water what did you want most
of all?” The pupil replied immediately, “I wanted
air. I wanted to breathe air.” “Thus,” said
the Zen Master, “When you want the All One as much as
you wanted air then you might attain.”
As for myself I wanted Love as much as I wanted air.
In fact, I needed it just as much as I needed air in order
to live in this world of form. So I went looking for it with
all my heart, with all my mind and with all my soul. I looked
for it in all the accepted places until one day on a train travelling
into London the grace of atonement arrived. In my hand I held
a book. It was by an enlightened Master named Jiddu Krishnamurti.
To know at-one ment requires that Love be the primary focus
in the life, and beyond the life, of ‘little me.’
This is the first commandment. It is the commandment that says,
“Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy
soul and with all thy mind.” Only this is not something
you do. This commandment is not just some moral injunction.
It is not meant to be something that comes from an authority
outside yourself. It is something you become. When you become
this Love thy Lord thy God you and Love are not separate. This
is what at-one-ment means. You and the Lord thy God are not
separate and in truth never have been.
To get to the state of We are All One is something you have
to want as much as life itself. Many are only tempted to begin
when life is a struggle for you to breathe. It is when you struggle
to make sense of what appears to be a senseless world full of
fear and full of a sense of separation and loss of meaning.
What takes you into seeking the One and All is suffering. This
is not a pretty idea but it is the first noble truth of the
Buddha, the Compassionate one. This is the first teaching of
the one who remained in form. This was his sacrifice. He remined
in the body in order to teach those in form about the formless.
He remained to teach about the timeless deathless one that we
each are in essence.
When we are content with the illusion of separateness, as many
of us are, there is no sense of needing life to be radically
different. We go through life until something happens to us,
which makes us ask questions of our life situation. We ask a
vision question. We might ask, “Who am I?” or “Is
this all there is?” In essence, we suffer.
When we feel that the world can no longer give us what we truly
long for, which is the knowing that we are Love, then we will
begin to seek the heaven that is within us. We will seek to
die before we die. We will seek to die to the illusion of the
life separate in a body. We will rise again from the dead and
know that we are the eternal one. To arise from the dead, metaphorically
speaking, is to overcome the sense of separateness created by
ego identity with the body.
Do you want to know that you are Love this much? Is Love the
most important thing in your life? Is Love the primary focus
in your day and in the life beyond ‘little me’ moment
to moment? How often do you use this word in your day-to-day
language? I don’t mean saying the word Love that is something
that has become fashionable?
Do you allow Love to be the primary focus of your imaginative
life? Does your imagination delight you? Does it bring you into
the light, which is the meaning of the word delight –
of the light? Do you honestly want Love to be the primary focus
within and beyond your life situation? What would you surrender
to know this? Would you give it all away? More importantly would
you give your sense of ‘little me’ away.
To follow Love is to follow the way of the Christ. This is
to make Christ Consciousness the primary focus of living in
the world of form. This does not require that you accept any
individual as a personal saviour. This does not require you
to go to church, chapel or synagogue. It requires that Love
is the primary reason d'etre in your life. It is to follow the
advice of Rumi when he says, “Risk all for Love.”
To be All One means you have to give up everything for Love.
This does not mean you do not own anything. It means that you
do not have your primary sense of self in attachment to anything.
To be All One take a look at little children. They do not experience
a sense of separateness until they fall into identifying experience
as ‘my experience.' Except that you become as little children
you will not enter heaven. You will not know what it is to be
enlightened.
To be All One you have to discover what it is you Love to do
with all your heart, mind and soul. You then have to do it so
that the doer disappears into the doing. You do what you do
and you release the fruits of the action to the Beloved. You
do what you do without concern for results. You learn to sing
your own song that is the Universal song singing through you.
Then you get a taste of ecstasy. Then you glimpse what it is
to live a life beyond the illusion of separateness in form.
What keeps you from ecstasy? In a word it is ‘ego.’
It is the ever-grasping one. Ego, as ‘little me’
grasps experience. It grasps the flow of life, which is the
flow of Love. Then it calls it ‘mine.’ Experience
is simply the free flow of infinite intelligence. You are not
separate from this.
Once you glimpse the All One you will honour the first commandment
because this is what will give relief to your longing. When
you glimpse you will honour the other commandment, "Love
thy neighbour as thy SELF." You cannot love your neighbour
if you think that you are separate from Love. In order to love
your neighbour as your SELF means that you have to know at-one-ment.
This is not an instruction to love your neighbour in the same
way that you love or like ‘little me.’ Ego and Love
cannot exist together. Without ego Love is. Without ego you
and the neighbour are one.
This does not mean you, as ‘little me,’ need like
your neighbour. Your focus is inward. Your focus is on the source.
Your focus is on Love and on knowing the All One. You are intent
on realising the invisible within form. You are in communion
with your inner teaching. Out of this communion you allow the
Universe to play through you. When you are so allowing then
any action that is needed manifests in the world of form.
Before I finish let me return to the story ‘We are All
One.’
But the Queen ordered him to stand. “Like the great
Emperor Yu of long ago, you tamed the great flood. We are all
one now. You have only to ask and I or any of my people will
come to your aid.”
The Queen in this story represents within each of us the aspect
of the Divine Feminine. This is the wisdom we are required to
claim within the experience of non-sperateness. It is not your
wisdom. Wisdom is an aspect of our true Self. This Queen is
as powerful as you allow her to be. She is represented by many
different names within many different world cultures. She is
known as Mary, Sophia, Quan Yin, Shakti and Tara to name a few.
She tells you that you only have to ask.
It is more important to know how to ask than what to ask for.
Do you ask from the sense of being separate from Love? The closer
you are to knowing that you are Love the more instant what is
asked for will manifest in form. This is the meaning of the
statement of Jesus the Christ when he said, “If you had
faith the size of a grain of mustard seed you would move mountains.”
‘Like the great Emperor Yu you have tamed the great
flood.’
The great Emperor Yu must have been a realised one. He tamed
the ego. He tamed the flood of social consciousness that says
throughout our life situation that ‘We are NOT all one.
`
‘You only have to ask, invites the Queen.
When you know at-one-ment your asking is creative. Your asking
is not wanting which is always from a sense of lack. From the
sense of all one nothing is wanted because all is already given.
You do not want a bigger car, a better house or something that
is judged better or worse within form. You want for no thing
because within the experience of All One you are already everything.
You are love eternal that is the infinite intelligence at the
heart of all creation.
When you are All One there is only one thing to ask for. This
is beautifully stated in the Buddhist prayer
May all beings be happy,
May all beings be free
from suffering.
Why ask for this? You ask because asking for this is asking
for truth without form to be made manifest in the world. You
are asking that your neighbour realise the truth that they are
Love. You are asking that they realise they are the timeless/deathless
one. This realisation is the end of suffering. When they realise
this then Love will manifest as action in the world. Heaven
will truly be on earth.
‘The old Peddler cleared his throat. “I am
looking for a certain herb. It will cure any disease of the
eyes.”
The throat represents the centre of communication.
This centre needs to be clear. It needs to be clear of ego.
The Candy Peddle is seeking for the herb that will cure any
disease of the eyes. This is not any eye. This is the eye of
knowing. This is the eye that when single fills the body full
of light. This is the light of wisdom but it is not your wisdom.
This is the light of enlightenment. This is the disillusion
of the primary illusion of separateness. This is the seeing
that We Are All One.
So on this Sunday morning silence falls.
My bird friend has finished singing but the Universal song
is never finished singing. This is because it is a song that
was never born and never dies. You are that song only this song
is unique to you if you will allow it expression. It will bring
you relief beyond belief. It will take you into the ecstasy
of the All One when you die to ego. When you die to the illusion
that you are separate from Love the Blessing is already here
and you have taken the herb that cures all diseases of the eye.
You become. Let it be so.
Until next week know that the Blessing is here and you are
it.

Storytelling Events
I have been blessed to go and tell stories at the
Inishowen Summer
Gathering in Donegal. This area of the NorthWest of Ireland
is a place of outstanding beauty. I will be giving a performance
which combines storytelling, poetry and music. This will be a
performance of three short stories centered around the theme 'Return
to Beauty.'
These stories combine the poetry of ancient and
modern day poets and mystics from many cultures. The stories are
written by Tony about the ancient people known in Ireland as the
Tuatha de Danaan - the fairy people. The stories center around
the time in Ireland called the Mythological Cycle. The cycle of
myth.
In the first story Tony tells about the Arrival
of Beauty on the shores of Erin in the form of the Tuatha de Danaan.
Then another story called 'The Coming of Iron' tells of the time
of the invasion of Erin by the Sons of Mil and of Amergin the
first poet of Ireland. This story then tells of the battle between
the Sons of Mil with the beautiful people - the Tuatha de Danaan.
This battle represents the battle between the heart and logic.
Finally the story session ends with a story called
'The Return to Love.' Here the fate of the Sons of Mil is weighted
in the balance of the Scales of Justice. In the Hall of Beyond
a blind seer woman tells the story of how far the Sons of Mil
have gone into the world of time and lost their connection to
beauty. The session ends with a well known fairy song from Ireland.
Between the stories Tony will sing some other popular
songs of Ireland about the fairy people.
These stories are written from a concern for the
environment and the way in which modern technology is alienating
individuals from their connection to nature. The stories will
suit children between the ages of five and ninety five.
